Red Kites
In terms of wildlife our main assets are the graceful red kites. This magnificent bird of prey with its reddish-brown body, angled wings and forked tail was once a common site across Britain but persecution meant that the Red Kite was exterminated in England, Scotland and most of Wales. People mistakenly thought that the Kites were a threat to their livestock but in fact they are scavengers eating carrion, small rodents and worms.
In 1989, a reintroduction scheme began and now the red kites are once again soaring over several areas of Britain including the Chilterns.
You can usually see them every day, sometimes several in the sky at once. It is even possible to recognise certain birds by their wing feathers.
